FREDERICK, Md. – In a Friday before Easter game, Widener softball split with the Hood Blazers in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader.
Following the split, the Pride move to 9-13 in the regular season and pick up their first conference win to improve to 1-5 in the MAC Commonwealth.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME 1
The first game of the doubleheader started with Katchur reaching on an error by the third baseman. The Pride closed the inning leaving one on base to head into the bottom of the first. A quick 1-2-3 inning for the Pride defense kept the game scoreless.
After a few innings of good defense, the Blazers saw their first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. The Pride tried to answer but left one on base after
Jalia Lawrence hit a triple. Another 1-2-3 inning from the Pride defense sent the team into the top of the seventh. Guerrieri opened the inning being hit by a pitch to put her at first.
Liv Robinson singled to right center to advance Guerrieri to third to put her in scoring position. Johnson's single sent Guerrieri home to tie the game at one. The Pride ended the inning with two on base. In the bottom of the seventh the Pride fell on a walk off single to give the Blazers a 2-1 win over the Pride.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME 2
After coming off a game one loss, the Pride and Blazers defenses open strong as the Pride see a quick 1-2-3 inning at bat. On the other side of the game,
Jill Gray opened with a strikeout. The defense stood strong and only allowed a hit. In the top of the second, the Pride offense got things going with
Eliana Guerrieri reaching on an error while
Leah DiGiandomenico single down the left field line. A strikeout ended the inning with the Pride leaving two on base.
Both teams kept the game at 0 until the top of the sixth when Katchur hit a single up the left field line. A
Kaylin Johnson bunt got her on base and advanced Katchur to second. Guerrieri hit a single to split the gap and allow Johnson to score to give the Pride a 1-0 lead. Later that inning,
Becca Tiley hit a sac fly to bring home
Jalia Lawrence to make the score 2-0. After a few offensive changes by the Blazers allowed get a few on base but Katchur saved the inning to leave three Blazers on base. A
Mikayla Fedele double got things going in the top of the seventh while Katchur singled down the third base line to allow Fedele to score. The Pride end the game with a 3-0 win.
