Widener Softball Falls to York Spartans in Saturday Matinee

The Game was Cut Short Due to the Weather

YORK, Pa. – Coming off a sweep of Albright on Wednesday, the Pride fell to the York College Spartans on Saturday 8-0. A doubleheader was originally scheduled, but the two teams only played one game due to the weather.

The Pride are 14-19 in the regular season. They are 3-8 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST YORK
Widener had three batters with one hit each: Jalia Lawrence, Katelyn Tong, and Eliana Guerrieri. The Pride's pitchers allowed 14 hits and eight runs.

The Pride put women on base early in the first inning, but no runs were scored. York got on the board in the bottom of the first by way of an RBI single with two runners on base. The second inning was a strong defensive showing from both sides, with Widener recording three groundouts in four batters. An RBI double and an RBI groundout in the bottom of the third gave the Spartans a three-run lead. Widener retired York on a groundout. After three, York led 3-0.

Although Widener had a runner on base in the top of the fourth due to a York error, the Spartans' defense prevented any serious threat of a Widener score. On offense, York had a home run on their first batter of the half-inning. As the Pride switched to pitcher Jill Gray in the bottom of the fifth, they immediately made a good play on defense. With two York runners on base, a single resulted in the Pride logging an out at home plate. But, on the next play, a sac-fly made the score 5-0. The Spartans added three runs in the sixth inning on a two-run RBI double and a Widener error. The Pride would not get a chance to play a top of the seventh due to the weather. York won 8-0.

UP NEXT
The Pride will be back home on Monday to face the Immaculata Mighty Macs in a doubleheader that was postponed earlier this season. Game times are 4 and 6 p.m.

Note: The York game that was postponed from Saturday has been rescheduled for Friday, April 28, at 4:30 p.m.
