READING, Pa. – The Pride cruised past the Albright College Lions 16-3 on Friday to bring them to a .500 record. They had 16 runs on 14 hits.
The Pride are 17-17 in the regular season. They are 11-8 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ALBRIGHT
Five players were tied for two runs each.
Kyle Brex and
Garrett McClain racked up two hits each.
Sean Curran struck out five batters and allowed no runs on the mound.
The Pride made a statement in the first three innings. An RBI on a fielder's choice, an RBI groundout, and an RBI single gave them a 3-0 first inning. They tripled the score in the second inning by scoring six runs. An Albright error bumped the score to 5-0, but that was not even the best play of the inning. On the next three batters, Widener had an RBI triple, an RBI double, and a
Nick Barenz two-run home run to blow open the deficit for the home team. The Pride added one run in the third to hit double digits. Meanwhile, despite the Lions having men on base in each of the first three innings, they were not able to bring anybody home. Widener led 10-0 after three.
The middle three innings were relatively quiet for both sides. The Lions retired the Pride's offense in the top of the fourth and top of the fifth in three batters each. Widener pitcher
Hayden O'Neill recorded just his third hit of the season in the top of the sixth. Widener ended the bottom of the sixth defensively by logging two straight groundouts. After six, the Pride was still ahead 10-0.
Both teams brought in runs in the seventh inning. McClain homered as the third batter of the half-inning. A few batters later,
Xavier Ruley's RBI single gave the Pride a 12-0 advantage. The Lions would finally get on the board in the seventh, scoring three runs. An RBI double, an RBI groundout, and a sac-fly cut into a quarter of the deficit. Widener's defense continued their solid play in the eighth inning, not allowing more than three batters to the plate. Even with the lead essentially safe, the Pride put four more runs on the board in the top of the ninth. Another Albright error scored
Myles Calderbank. Three RBIs in the next four batters, by way of a single, double, and groundout, increased the lead even more. The Lions had two men on base in the bottom of the ninth, but a fly-out ended the game. Widener won 16-3.
