Widener Baseball Clinches 10th Conference Win of Season in Split with Lebanon Valley

The Pride Put Up 13 Runs for the Day

CHESTER, Pa. – The Pride have entered double-digit wins in the MAC Commonwealth after their split with the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen on Saturday. Widener won the first game 9-3, but Lebanon Valley won the second game 7-4.

The Pride are 16-17 in the regular season. They are 10-8 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST LEBANON VALLEY

Game 1

Kyle Brex and Nick Barenz had two runs each. Andrew Yates racked up two hits. Starting on the mound, Hayden O'Neill allowed nine hits and three runs in six innings.

Widener began with an RBI single in the bottom of the first. The Dutchmen left a man on second base in the top of the second, as they then defended well against the Pride to wrap up the second inning. The two sides would exchange runs in the third. An RBI double tied the game for the Dutchmen. Widener would load the bases in the bottom of the third, despite having two outs. Bryce Fremgen's double was good for three RBIs to open a deficit for the visitors. Lebanon Valley caught a fly-out to retire the inning. Widener was ahead 4-1 after three.

Although Lebanon Valley was down a few runs, they did not stop swinging the bats. A two-RBI double in the fourth inning cut the Pride's lead to 4-3. Widener played good defense in the top of the fifth, catching a runner stealing to capture the third out. Going into the bottom of the sixth, with a one-run lead, Widener ripped off five scores. Two RBI doubles, an RBI single, and a two-run RBI single blew open the Pride's advantage to 9-3. With the Dutchmen needing a miracle in the top of the seventh, the Pride logged three outs in four batters to win the game. Widener took the first game 9-3.

Game 2

Fremgen led the way with two runs. Anthony Boccio, Fremgen, and Justin Costanzo had two hits each. Widener's pitchers allowed eight hits, but they struck out nine batters.

Lebanon Valley's second batter launched a home run in the top of the first. A passed ball brought in another run a few batters later. The Dutchmen would add an RBI single in the top of the second to lead 3-0. But, the final batter of the half-inning struck out swinging. While the Pride would load the bases in the bottom of the second, the Dutchmen recorded a strikeout for the last out. Both teams were stingy on defense in the third inning, as neither had more than four batters to the plate. Lebanon Valley led after three 3-0.

Lebanon Valley mounted a larger lead in the fourth inning. A home run on the first batter made the score 4-0. Two Widener errors and an RBI single increased Lebanon Valley's lead even more. Even with a 7-0 advantage, the Dutchmen's lead was not safe. Fremgen homered in the bottom of the fourth to get Widener in the scoring column. The fifth inning saw Costanzo and Boccio reach base safely, but they were not able to score. The Pride made things interesting in the sixth inning, though. An RBI single and a two-run RBI single lowered the deficit to just three runs. The Pride would need a comeback in the bottom of the seventh to get the job done. They loaded the bases after a hit-by-pitch. However, Lebanon Valley struck out the final batter to retire the home team. The Pride fell in the second game 7-4. Out of the three games between Friday and Saturday, Widener won two of three.
