Widener Baseball Comes Up Just Short Versus Delaware Valley Aggies

Garrett McClain Starred Despite the Loss

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – After the Pride's monster doubleheader on Tuesday, where they scored a combined 28 runs, Widener fell to the Delaware Valley University Aggies 9-8 on Wednesday.

The Pride are 14-16 in the regular season. They are 8-7 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST DELAWARE VALLEY
Garrett McClain led the way with three runs, three hits, and three RBIs. Widener's pitchers allowed 11 hits, but they struck out three batters.

A Delaware Valley error resulted in two Widener scores in the top of the first. The Pride's defense recorded three outs in four batters to end the inning. The Aggies countered in the second inning. They had back-to-back scores on an RBI triple and an RBI groundout. This tied the game. However, the Aggies were not finished. They added three more runs in the third. Two RBI singles and a score on a double play resulted in Delaware Valley building their lead. Delaware Valley led after three 5-2.

The two sides exchanged runs in the fourth inning. While the Pride had an RBI double, the Aggies loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth. A fielder's choice and an RBI triple made the score 7-3. Delaware Valley put two more scores up in the fifth on a Widener error and a sac-fly. This would be the final score for the home team. The Pride's defense would stand strong in the bottom of the sixth, getting three outs in three batters. The score was 9-3 Aggies through six.

Both teams were scoreless in the seventh inning, leading into the eighth. Widener saved their best offense for this inning, putting up five runs. With bases loaded, McClain's double brought in three RBIs. An RBI triple and an RBI groundout moments later saw Delaware Valley's lead shrink considerably. The Pride went into the top of the ninth needing a few runs to stay alive. Although Widener had two men on base, a groundout retired the Pride's offense. The Aggies won the game 9-8.
