DeHaven Scores Season-High Six Goals

CHESTER, Pa. – Despite a close game in the final seconds, Widener women's lacrosse defeated the Moravian University Greyhounds on Saturday 12-11.

The Pride are 2-2 in the regular season. They have yet to see a MAC Commonwealth opponent.

  • In goal, Katelyn Rosini recorded 10 saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED AT EDITH R. DIXON FIELD
Not even one minute into the game, DeHaven picked up her first goal of the afternoon. The Pride would go on to play great defense, blocking a shot by Moravian. With 11 minutes left, Ward got on the board to increase Widener's lead to 2-0. After a wide shot by the Greyhounds, they scored a few seconds later to put themselves in the scoring column. Widener's offense wanted to score again to counter Moravian's goal, but multiple shots were saved. That is, until DeHaven broke through to continue her solid first quarter. Alex Krohn had the assist. Although no one on either team scored for the remainder of the quarter, both defenses made strong plays. The Pride led after the first 15 minutes, 3-1.

A team draw control by Widener began the second quarter. After a good clear attempt by the Greyhounds, Moravian would cut their deficit to one point following their second goal. It would not take long for them to tie the game 3-3, though. A free-position shot gave Moravian the opportunity for the tying shot. This tie would not last, however, as DeHaven scored Widener's fourth goal moments later. This would be one of two consecutive DeHaven goals. With seven minutes in the half, she scored on a free-position shot. The score was 5-3 Widener. As the game was within either team's reach, the defenses were making sure the other did not get too far ahead. Both Widener and Moravian would score once more each in the quarter, almost back-to-back. Catherine Scott scored for the Pride in that moment. The half ended on a save by Rosini. The score after the first half was 6-4 Widener.

Moravian won the draw control to start the third quarter. However, a quick turnover led to a Pride score from DeHaven. Even with the Greyhounds countering with a goal of their own almost three minutes later, Widener found the goal twice within a minute from the Moravian goal. DeHaven and Scott were responsible for the points. The score was 9-5 Widener. Under nine minutes to go, the Greyhounds responded on a free-position shot. The Pride, getting a free-position shot of their own, would score again through Ward. That was Widener's 10th goal of the day. Although a shot by Moravian was blocked, they eventually broke through for one more goal in the quarter. Ward would finish things off with another score to make the score 11-7 Widener after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, the Pride's lead almost slipped from their grasp. Despite winning the opening tip and getting three shots off, Moravian forced a shot-clock violation. The Greyhounds would score two goals in a row to cut Widener's advantage to 11-9. Following a successful clear, Ward found the net again to increase the lead to three. Not out of the game yet, Moravian had two shots get past Rosini. Suddenly, it was a one-point affair. The ending consisted of good defense by the Pride. After a Clark Trowbridge turnover, the Greyhounds rushed to eliminate their deficit. However, Rosini saved the final shot, ending Moravian's attempt to tie the game at the conclusion of regulation. Widener escaped with a 12-11 victory.
