Widener Baseball Falls to Swarthmore Garnet

Justin Costanzo and Andrew Yates Each Homered

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Although the Pride put up six runs on Thursday, they lost to the Swarthmore College Garnet 10-6.

The Pride are 9-14 in the regular season. They are 4-6 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST SWARTHMORE
Justin Costanzo had a team-high three runs. He and Andrew Yates tied with two hits each. Widener's pitchers allowed 10 hits, but struck out four batters.

Widener started the game off well, as Costanzo homered on his first at-bat. The Pride left two men on base, though, as a groundout ended the half-inning. An RBI single and a sac-fly for the Garnet was enough for them to take a 2-1 lead. In the second, a Widener error allowed a runner to advance to second, and he scored on the next play. However, the Pride made a defensive stop in the third inning. After a double and a foul-out, the Garnet had a man on third base. He would not get home, as a fly-out retired the inning.  Swarthmore led 3-1 after three.

Widener's offense made strides to get men into scoring position in the fourth, but Swarthmore's defense kept countering the offense. The Garnet brought in four runs in the fourth inning. They loaded the bases and scored a run on a Widener error. Three RBIs on three different batters were the other scores. While the fifth inning was quiet due to no runs scored, Swarthmore had men on second and third base. The Pride's defense logged a fly-out to get back on offense. Each side exchanged runs in the sixth. An Ian Kauffman single scored two RBIs. The Garnet responded on an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth. Widener was trailing 8-3 after six.

The Pride had their most successful offensive showing in the seventh. Kyle Brex scored on a wild pitch. On the next batter, Yates smacked a two-run home run to make the score 8-6. Swarthmore had a sac-fly and an RBI single to bring in two of their own runners in the bottom of the seventh. Widener's defense had a double play in the bottom of the eighth to build momentum going into the ninth. The Pride would get men on first and third base, but the final batters went down swinging. Swarthmore won 10-6.
