Widener Baseball Soars in Win Versus Eastern Eagles

Four Runs in the Sixth Inning Propelled the Pride to Victory

CHESTER, Pa. – The Pride snapped their two-game losing streak on Tuesday, as they defeated the Eastern University Eagles 8-5 in a MAC Commonwealth battle.

The Pride are 9-13 in the regular season. They are 4-6 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST EASTERN
Anthony Boccio and Kyle Brex each brought in two runs. Andrew Yates had two hits. Sean Curran started on the mound, allowing six hits and four runs.

Both the Pride and the Eagles got their offenses going in the first inning. Eastern scored two runs on a Widener error. However, Curran struck out two consecutive batters to get out of the half-inning. Multiple Eastern errors gave the Pride momentum in the bottom of the first, which led to a Justin Costanzo groundout RBI to make the score 2-1 Eastern. The second inning was quiet for both sides, but Curran struck out all three Eagles' batters to silence them. Although neither team scored in the third, Widener had a chance to score. The Pride loaded the bases, but a groundout was the final out of the inning. After three, the score was 2-1 Eastern.

Widener's bats continued their attack in the fourth inning. As Ryan Bauerle stole second and third base, Stephen Posner hit an RBI on a fly-out to tie the score 2-2. Widener's defense held their ground in the fifth. A balk advanced an Eastern runner to third, but a strikeout retired the Eagles. The Pride then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. They loaded the bases, so the Eagles made a pitching change. A fly-out once again turned into an RBI. Brex scored the run. The sixth inning was where each team had one of their more successful offensive displays of the day. Eastern scored two runs on a home run. Meanwhile, the Pride answered with four of their own runs. As they loaded the bases, Brex's double was good for two RBIs. Two batters later, a Yates' double also brought in two RBIs. The Eagles' defense ended the inning with a fly-out. Widener led 7-4 through six innings.

Following a quick defensive stop in the top of the seventh, the Pride got on the board in the bottom of the inning. A Posner single eventually led to him stealing second and third base. An Eastern error would bring Posner in to score. An Eastern RBI double in the eighth inning would be the last run scored of the afternoon. Needing three runs to tie the game, the Eagles were not able to rally together their offense. They were retired in three straight batters. The final score was 8-5 Widener.
