Widener Softball Falls to the Garnet in Swarthmore Doubleheader

The Pride Scored Four Runs Across the Two Games

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Pride could not pick up a win on Tuesday, as they lost to the Swarthmore College Garnet. Swarthmore won 7-2 in the first game and 3-2 in game two.

The Pride are 4-8 in the regular season. They are 0-2 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST SWARTHMORE

Game 1

Jalia Lawrence scored both of Widener's runs in the first game. Katelyn Tong led the way with two hits. Sam McCarthy went four innings as the starting pitcher. She allowed eight hits and seven runs.

The Pride's offense was rolling early in the game. With two women on base, a Tong RBI single brought Lawrence home. Widener's defense was strong in the bottom of the first, as they got three outs in three batters. Despite earning a walk in the second, the Pride did not have success in earning another run. Widener's defense stood their ground once again in the second. A Swarthmore triple and two walks loaded the bases, but a strikeout ended the inning for the Garnet. Lawrence would score again in the top of the third because of a Swarthmore error. However, the Garnet scored five runs in the bottom of the third to open a deficit for Widener. Multiple errors by the Pride and a double by the Garnet were the causes for most of those runs. A groundout retired the inning. Swarthmore led 5-2 after three.

Widener had a chance to score in the fourth inning. Not only did the Garnet prevent them from doing so, but they added two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Two fly-outs turned into RBIs. The score was 7-2 Swarthmore. Although both sides put women in a position to score in the fifth, neither was able to make a serious threat to score. Widener recorded a double play defensively in the bottom of the sixth, which led into the top of the seventh. The Pride, though, were retired in three batters to end the game. The Garnet won the game 7-2.

Game 2

Lawrence and Kaylin Johnson were responsible for the two Widener runs in the second game. The four hits came from Johnson, Becca Tiley, McCarthy, and Leah DiGiandomenico. Mikayla Fedele started on the mound. Although she allowed five hits and three runs, she struck out three batters.

Widener's offense was off to a good start, like the first game. The Pride had the bases loaded before back-to-back singles brought in two runs. But, a fielder's choice and a groundout ended the rally for the Pride. The Garnet answered back in the first inning, recording an RBI single to make the score 2-1 Widener. After a quick top of the second, Swarthmore tied the game with another RBI single. In the third, the Garnet also brought in one run. Widener logged three straight outs to end the inning, though. After three, the score was 3-2 Swarthmore.

The fourth inning saw the Pride make another strong defensive stop. Runners on second and third for the Garnet were unable to score, thanks to a foul-out on the third out. Tiley hit a triple in the fifth inning, but she did not earn a run. Meanwhile, Widener's defense caught a runner stealing in the bottom of the fifth. Following a Widener defensive error that allowed women to advance to first and third base, a fly-out made sure a run would not be brought in. Even though the Pride's deficit was slim going into the final inning, Widener fell to the Garnet 3-2. Swarthmore had won both games.
