Widener Softball Splits with Cedar Crest

The Pride Put Together 10 Combined Runs in the Doubleheader

CHESTER, Pa. – After two doubleheaders were cancelled last week due to weather, Widener softball finally got back to work on Tuesday. They shut out the Cedar Crest College Falcons 7-0 in game one, but they lost 11-3 in game two.

The Pride are 5-9 in the regular season. They are 0-2 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST CEDAR CREST

Game 1

Kaylin Johnson and Leah DiGiandomenico had two runs each. All seven runs were scored by a different player. Mikayla Fedele went all seven innings, only allowing five hits.

The Pride began the game with a strong showing on defense. With women on second and third base for Cedar Crest, Widener recorded three straight outs to prevent a run from coming in. Becca Tiley hit an RBI double to bring in Johnson in the bottom of the first. After DiGiandomenico was walked in the bottom of the second, Sam McCarthy smacked a two-run home run to increase Widener's early advantage. Even though they had another runner in scoring position later, no runs were scored for the remainder of the inning. The Pride would keep their foot on the gas in the third as well. Two batters would get on base, but a fielder's choice would end the inning. Widener was ahead 3-0 after three.

The fourth inning was quiet for both offenses. Five of the six combined outs for the teams were groundouts. The Pride essentially put the game away in the fifth, though. With women on first and third base, a Katelyn Tong sacrifice fly turned into an RBI. DiGiandomenico would then smack a two-run home run to make the score 6-0. Cedar Crest, meanwhile, were not finding answers on offense. Despite two runners in scoring position in the sixth, a strikeout and a groundout retired their offense once again. Caitlyn Katchur scored the final run in the bottom of the sixth. The Falcons tripled in the seventh inning, but it was too late for a comeback. The Pride won the game 7-0.

Game 2

Tiley, Tong, and McCarthy each accumulated one run. Tong also had two hits. Widener's pitchers allowed 12 hits and 11 runs, but they struck out three batters.

The Falcons bounced back in game two. They had women on first and third base in the first inning before an RBI sac-fly put them on the board. Cedar Crest added four runs over the next two innings, with two runs in each. The Falcons scored in the second on two Widener errors, and they brought in two runs on one play in the third from another Widener error. The Pride, however, struck out the final batter of the inning. Cedar Crest led 5-0 after three.

Widener's defense struggled in the fourth, allowing three more runs to Cedar Crest's lead. Two RBIs, one on a single and one on a double, and an RBI on a fielder's choice made the score 8-0. In the bottom of the fourth, the Pride would finally break through to score. A Tong RBI single brought in Tiley to cut into the deficit. The fifth and sixth innings were quick for both sides. Although, the Pride were in a position to score in the bottom of the fifth. DiGiandomenico got as far as third base before the Pride were retired. The seventh was an offensive showing for both sides. As Cedar Crest had a runner on second base, an RBI triple brought in one run. They would add two more runs for the inning, despite ending on a double play. Down to their last three outs, Widener loaded the bases. Consecutive walks resulted in two RBIs. But, a pickoff at second base was the last out of the game. The final score was 11-3 Falcons. Widener and Cedar Crest had earned a split.
