The Pride Recorded Five Hits in the First Game and Eight Hits in the Second

CHESTER, Pa. – With Widener softball playing their first conference games of the season, they fell in both games to the Stevenson University Mustangs. Stevenson won 5-1 in game one and 9-6 in game two.

The Pride are 4-6 in the regular season. They are 0-2 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST STEVENSON

Game 1

Becca Tiley scored the Pride's lone run of the first game. Five players had one hit, including Tiley. Caitlyn Katchur started on the mound, allowing three hits and four runs.

The Pride started their afternoon with a Mikayla Fedele walk in the bottom of the first inning. Despite loading the bases, no runs were scored. The second inning was a defensive battle for both sides. A Stevenson single provided the only base runner for either side for the inning. With one out in the top of the third, Stevenson's offense loaded the bases. Jordan Fangman of the Mustangs hit a grand slam to put her team on the board. The Pride, though, logged a fly-out and a groundout to retire the half-inning. The Mustangs led after three innings, 4-0.

In the fourth, Widener scored their only run. Tiley hit a double to get on base before a groundout and a single brought her to home plate. The Mustangs countered in the top of the fifth with their own run. An RBI double made the score 5-1. The Pride got two women on base thanks to a Stevenson fielding error and a walk. Despite this, the Pride were not able to bring anyone in to score. The Pride played good defense in the sixth and seventh innings to bring them to the bottom of the seventh, needing a few runs to make a comeback. Multiple Mustangs' errors allowed Eliana Guerrieri to advance to second base, and she even got to third on a groundout. However, the Pride were retired on a groundout. Stevenson won the first game 5-1.

Game 2

Fedele led the way in the second game with two runs. Kaylin Johnson had two hits. On the mound, the Pride's pitchers allowed 11 hits and struck out five batters.

The first inning of game two was a quick one for both sides, as each retired the other in three batters. The Mustangs would attack first, though, with a solo home run in the second inning. The Pride had two women on base in the bottom of the second, but no runs were brought in. Widener's defense bounced back in the top of the third. Stevenson had runners on second and third base, but a strikeout put the Mustangs away for the half-inning. Widener had their most successful inning of this game in the bottom of the third. After loading the bases, the Pride used an RBI single and a grand slam to give them five runs. Sam McCarthy was responsible for the grand slam. The Pride led 5-1 through three innings.

While Stevenson went scoreless in the fourth, they proceeded to score at least one run through the final three innings. The Mustangs knocked in three scores in the fifth due to three consecutive singles. In the sixth, Stevenson brought in four runners to score. The Mustangs' top three batters in the batting order gave them multiple RBIs in the sixth. To start the seventh inning, the Mustangs smacked another solo home run to go up 9-5. Widener's defense prevented any other runners from getting close to home. Fedele scored the final run for the game in the bottom of the seventh. It was on a Katelyn Tong RBI single. Tong then advanced to second base on a Stevenson error. However, the Mustangs recorded three straight outs to end the rally. Stevenson won 9-6, and they swept the Pride.
