Widener Baseball Opens 2023 Campaign with 2-1 Victory Over Kean

Nick Barenz and Stephen Posner earn first runs of 2023 season

KEAN, N.J. – Barenz and Posner of baseball come up big in 2023 season opener and earn Widener's first runs in a 2-1 victory against Kean.

Following the victory, the Pride open the season 1-0 and will see MAC Commonwealth opponent Stevenson on Mar 10.

BY THE NUMBERS HOW IT HAPPENED IN KEAN

In a spring like weather setting, the Pride come away with a 2-1 victory over the Kean Cougars. Defensively, the Pride open strong with a quick out on a groundout to the short stop. Kean got on the board early with a run by Marano base hit to third which advanced Hilsheimer to give Kean an early advantage.

Yates was the first to get on base in the top of the 2nd from a ground ruled double. The Pride held the Cougars to a quick three outs in the bottom of the 2nd while Brex sent a down the infield line for a double. Brex's hit gave Posner the go ahead to tie the game at one a piece.

Neither team could get the offense going but kept the defensive game strong. In the top of the 6th, Widener went on to break the scoring drought that started from a Barenz double to right-center field. On deck was Yates who hit his second double of the day which also earned him his first RBI of the season.

The Blue and Gold ramped up their defense and kept the Cougars to six fast outs. Within the next two innings, Brex earned another hit and Barenz advanced on a hit by a pitch. Kean tried to get their offense going in the top of the eighth but the Pride held strong to leave two on base.

On the day, the team saw a .714 on-base plugs slugging percentage and seven strikeouts.
