Women’s Lacrosse Picks Up First Win of the Season Against Arcadia

Katie Ward leads Pride with four goals

GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Widener women's lacrosse team starts their season off with a 12-9 victory over Arcadia on the road. This put the Pride at 1-0 to start their season. 

BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Katie Ward led Widener by scoring four goals. Clark Trowbridge and Catherine Scott followed with three goals each. 
  • Pride offense outshot the Knights 37-21, 24 of the shots on goal. 
  • Widener won 19 draw controls compared to Arcadia's six. 
  • In goal, Katie Rosini saw nine saves. 
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ARCADIA 

The Pride wasted no time getting a goal as Clark Trowbridge scored the first goal of the game thirty seconds into the first quarter. Arcadia was quick to answer, scoring their first goal two minutes later. The Pride and the Knights went back and forth this quarter, each answering an opponent's goal within minutes.  With the score tied at 1-1, Catherine Scott found the back of the net with 9:02 on the clock, but that was swiftly answered by Arcadia's Ashley Starkey who put the score at 2-2. Coming off the next draw control, Katie Ward scored and four minutes later, Clark Trowbridge scored again, putting Widener ahead 4-2. With two minutes remaining in the first quarter, Arcadia scored two goals, and the quarter ended at 4-4. 

The second quarter saw the same explosive offense as the Pride scored right away due to an Alex Krohn goal that was assisted by Ward. The second quarter, like the first, was a back-and-forth battle, but the Pride was able to get ahead by two, thanks to two back-to-back goals by Ward and Scott. The Pride entered halftime ahead 7-5. Widener out-shot Arcadia 17-9 this half. 

Coming into the second half looking to maintain and extend their lead, Widener did just that. A goal by Trowbridge with 10:33 on the clock put the Pride ahead by three. Off the next draw, Maddie Phillips scored her first goal off an assist from Trowbridge. Widener went on to score one more goal, another goal from Catherine Scott, before the Knights got into scoring position. With four minutes remaining in the quarter, Arcadia scored two more goals, putting the score at 10-7 and the Pride finish the quarter ahead by three. 

The final quarter saw a goal right away, but this time coming from the Knights, putting the score at 10-8 to start the fourth. Coming off a time out and being man-down, Ward got things going again for the Pride offense and scored another goal with nine minutes remaining. Ward's goal was quickly answered by Arcadia but with the clock winding down. A Knight shot clock violation allowed Ward to find a way to put one more goal in with 1:55 on the clock. The Pride finished the game out and walked away with a 12-9 victory. 

UP NEXT 
The Pride is on the road again as they travel to Swarthmore to take on the Garnet on Saturday. The game time is set for noon.
