HOW IT HAPPENED
Widener cheerleading competed in three categories at the 2023 MAC Championships.
Four ladies earned gold in the Partner Stunt category. Marinucci, Hagginbothom, Scully, and Siess performed a gold worthy performance that was judged based on execution, difficulty, variety, transitions, the overall effect, and showmanship. Based on 75 points, the four scored 69.2 points to outscore the Misericordia team by two.
In the Traditional, teams are asked to perform a two to two-and-a-half-minute routine that was judged in two sections. In the cheer section, teams were awarded points based on crowd leading, skills, and the overall impression. In the music section, teams were awarded points based on partner stunts, pyramids, tumbling, basket tosses, and overall impression of the sounds. Out of 100 points, Widener scored 78.1 points and placed second behind Misericordia by one point.
The last category was Gameday. In Gameday teams are asked to perform a situational gameday routine such as a timeout or the fight song. Gameday is scored out of 100 points and broken down into four scoring sections. Within timeout, teams were scored based on the material, execution, crowd leading tools, and the visual appeal. Crowd leading sideline looked at the material, execution, effectiveness and technique, and crowd leading tools. The third was the fight song, scored based on material, execution, motion technique, and vidual appeal with the last being the overall impression of the routine. Widener grabbed the silver with 97.45 points.
