CHESTER, Pa. - The Widener men's basketball team went head-to-head with conference opponent York in their last regular-season game of the year. York pushed past the Pride and walked away with a 78-64 victory in the Schwartz Center.
The Pride finishes regular season play with a 17-8 record and 11-5 in MAC Commonwealth play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Dominic Dunn led the Pride with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Dunn went 6-6 at the free-throw line.
- Pat Holden scored 12 for Widener and Steven Matlack followed with 10 points.
- Pride offense scored 10 points off of fast breaks and 18 points off of turnovers.
- Defensively, Widener outrebounded the Spartans 35-25 and saw 10 steals on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST YORK
The Pride started the game off with a Kenny Lewis layup for Senior Day at Schwartz a minute and thirty into the first half. The Spartan's quickly answered with a triple and the two offenses got moving. A Pat Holden three put the Pride ahead 4-3. Going back and forth, the Pride and the Spartans found themselves tied 15-15 after a Steven Matlack three found the bottom of the with 7:52 on the clock. York capitalized on this lead and took off. With 2:07 on the clock, Luke Mazur sank two free throws and narrowed the score gap to four points and put the score at 28-24 in favor the Spartans. Dominic Dunn took control of the last few minutes of the half, scoring six points in two minutes for the Pride and they finished the half, 34-30. The Pride went 7-11 from the free-throw line this half and out-rebounded York 19-10.
Coming out in the second half, the Pride and Spartan offense got going right way. Holden quickly got the Pride on the board with three off a Kevin Schenk. Pride offense struggled to gain a lead but never saw a score gap larger than 10 points. A pair of Dunn free throws put the Pride down 41-49. A scoreless two minutes goes by, a foul on Xavier Ernest put him at the line where he made one and missed one. Pride got hot with 9:05 on the clock when Ernest dropped in a driving layup, putting the score at 59-52 in favor of the Spartans. Neither team scored for three minutes but a good layup by Matlack put Widener down by only five points. A pair of Dunn free-throws added two to the score and put the Pride down by four. Holden found Matlack for three, but it wasn't enough as the Spartans had the lead and ran with it to the end of the game, finishing the game with a 78-64 win over the Pride.

Widener will make a post season MAC Commonwealth playoff appearance as the number two seed. They will face Hood at Schwartz Athletic Center on Wednesday the 22nd. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
