YORK, Pa. - Widener Field Hockey has locked up a playoff berth for the 2023 conference playoffs. Listed as the third seed, the Pride will head to York, Pa. and face the second seed York College Spartans.
The Pride finished 8-9 on the season including a 4-3 record against conference opponents. The team had an up and down season but finished strong by taking down two conference rivals to end the season. Widener started off with a 5-0 win against Delaware Valley but fell in their next two matches against Mary Washington and Cabrini. During conference play, the Pride went 1-2 in their first three matches before finishing 3-1.
As for their opponent, York went 14-3 on the season and 6-1 in the conference. Their only conference loss came against #5 Messiah 0-2. Messiah is first ranked in the conference. Against Widener, York is entering the match 3-1 in previous games.
In the last Pride-Spartans matchup, York came out victorious 1-0 at York in overtime. The Pride failed to record a shot in that game.
The winner of this match would face the winner of Stevenson-Messiah for the MAC Commonwealth Championship. That match would be on Saturday, Nov. 4.
