Game Time on Tuesday, Oct. 31 is at 7 p.m.

10/30/2023 4:31:00 PM

YORK, Pa. – Widener women's soccer has clinched a playoff berth in the 2023 postseason. As the third seed, they will travel to York, Pa. to take on the two-seeded York College Spartans.

The Pride went 5-6-6 in the regular season. They were 3-2-2 against MAC opponents. Widener began the season off to a slow start, as they had two losses and four ties. The Pride did not score a goal in those six matches. However, the Pride finally broke through to win 2-0 against Cabrini on Sept. 20. In total, Widener was 4-3-1 at home, 1-1-3 on the road, and 0-2-2 on neutral sites. Coming into this match against York, Widener had two consecutive ties.

Meanwhile, York had a 12-6 record (6-1 MAC). Their only conference loss was on Oct. 28, where they fell 3-0 to #5 Messiah. Messiah is the top seed in the playoffs. Coming into this match against Widener, York has won four of their last five.

The Pride and the Spartans met in Chester on Sept. 30, where York won 1-0. The Spartans scored a goal with 58 seconds left in regulation.

The Pride's stars were on full display this season. Forward Alyssa Carman and midfielder Brynn Foley were the only two to start all 17 regular-season matches. Carman led Widener in most offensive categories: goals (4), points (8), shots on goal and shot attempts (24/45), and game-winning shots (2, tied for first with Maggie Boyes). Forward Kelly Barr was another weapon for the Pride. She had three goals, six points, 14 shots on goal in 24 attempts, and a game winner. Barr's stats were second-most on the team except the game winners. Her one game winner was third.

Samantha Coon was the primary goalie, playing over 1000 minutes in goal. In 12 starts, her record was 4-4-4. She recorded 77 saves, seven shutouts, and she only allowed 12 goals. Coon became Widener's all-time leader in career shutouts with 16.1 on Oct. 21 against Albright. She currently sits at 16.2.

The winner of this match would face the winner of Eastern-Messiah for the MAC Commonwealth Championship. That match would be on Saturday, Nov. 4.
