Field Hockey Finds Themselves On The Wrong Side Of A 2-0 Game Despite A Great Defensive Performance

Abby Blake's Superb Saves Stall Messiah Until Late In The Fourth

CHESTER, Pa. - Despite a great defensive effort, Widener Field Hockey drops under .500 in conference play as they take a loss to Messiah University 2-0 at home. 

The Pride drop to 5-8 on the season and fall to 1-2 in conference play. Their next conference match will take place at home October 18th against Stevenson. 

BY THE NUMBERS 

  • Abby Blake with seven saves 

  • Juliana Sanchez with a team-leading 2 shots, with both being on goal 

  • Despite Messiah's 20 shots, only nine were on goal 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Quarter one only saw one shot as the defensive battle lead to a 0-0 end of the first.

  • Three shots by Messiah in the second all missed their mark as Abby Blake saves one and the rest were off target; the teams head to halftime 0-0.

  • The scoreless tie continues as Abby Blake has five saves and the third quarter ends still 0-0.

  • Despite the defensive stand, Messiah scores two goals late in the fourth as they take the game and Widener falls 0-2.

UP NEXT 

The Pride will look to bounce back and get a crucial conference win against the Stevenson University Mustangs. That game will be held Wednesday, October 18th at 7pm.
