OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Widener University women's volleyball team opened up MAC Commonwealth play on Wednesday against Stevenson, but the Pride could not come away with a conference win on the road as the Mustangs won the match in straight sets.
The Pride slipped to 0-5 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST STEVENSON
- The Pride had their best effort in the opening set, as they rallied from an 18-8 deficit by going on a 13-6 run to cut the Mustangs' lead to 24-21. However, the Mustangs won the game on an attack error by Widener.
- In the second set, Widener almost rallied from an 20-11 deficit by going on a 7-1 run to make it 21-18. But, Stevenson scored the next five points to earn the win.
- In the final set, the Pride got down by as many as 10 points, but managed to trim the deficit to 20–15 by taking advantage of four attack errors and getting a kill from Alex Verchio. However, Stevenson won five of the next seven points to take the match.
- Shannon Toomey led the Pride with seven kills and two blocks.
- Megan Barthol paced Widener with a double-double, handing out 15 assists and making 12 digs.
- Lilyanna Martucci registered a match-high three aces.
UP NEXT
Widener goes back on the road on Saturday to face Rowan and Catholic in a tri-match at Rowan.. The Pride open with Rowan at 11 a.m., then will take on Catholic at 1 p.m.
