YORK, Pa. – The Widener women's lacrosse team played tough in the first half against No. 12 York, the Spartans put in eight goals in the third quarter en route to earning a 17-8 win in MAC Commonwealth action on Saturday afternoon at Kinsley Field.
With the loss, the Pride dropped to 9-6 on the season and 4-2 in conference play. The Pride are currently in fourth in the MAC Commonwealth standings. The top five teams in the standings qualify for the MAC Commonwealth Tournament, which begins on Monday.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST YORK
- The Pride fell into a 2-0 hole in the first three minutes, but tied the game after Amber Bretz scored two goals – the first one with 11:10 left and the second one five minutes later. York managed to break the tie with another goal to take.a 3-2 lead after the opening period.
- In the second quarter, the Spartans scored two goals in the first four minutes to extend their lead to 5-2, but the Pride managed to outscore them, 3-1, in the final eight minutes to trim the deficit to 6-5 at halftime. Bretz scored her third goal of the game and 15th career hat trick, while Clark Trowbridge added two goals in an 11-second span in the final 30 seconds of the period.
- In the third quarter, York scored six of its eight goals in the quarter in a row to take a 12-5 advantage that they would not relinquish. The Pride received their lone goal in the quarter from Trowbridge, who notched her second career hat trick.
- In the fourth, Gab Cohen fired in a pair of goals to round out the Pride's scoring.
- The Pride saw goalie Maddie save 15 shots while facing a season-high 37 shots in the loss.
