CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University baseball team opened its MAC Commonwealth Championship quarterfinal series with the Eastern Eagles, splitting a doubleheader. The Pride won the opener 8-2 before falling 17-11 in the afternoon contest. The best-of-three series is knotted at 1-1.
GAME ONE NOTES
- Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first as with two out, Bryce Fremgen singled through the middle, plating Tommy McParland who reached on an infield hit to open the inning.
- After Eastern scored in the top of the fifth, the Pride tied it again the sixth as Fremgen lashed a hit to right, once again scoring McParland.
- Widener put the game away in the seventh as the Blue and Gold scored five times, highlighted by RBI doubled from Nick Barenz, McParland, and a solo homer by Fremgen.
- Barenz knocked in his second run of the game with a sac fly in the eighth.
- Joey Zettlemoyer started for Widener and tossed 6.1 innings, giving up two runs.
- Kyle Laing (1-1) earned the win with 1.2 perfect innings, striking out three.
- Fremgen finished 3-for-4 with three RBI.
GAME TWO NOTES
- Widener jumped on the board with the initial run of the game in the second on an RBI single from Brandon Reis to score Justin Costanzo.
- Eastern put a pair on the board in the third, but the Pride came right back in the bottom of the inning with a five-run frame. Keying the offense was an RBI double from Anthony Boccio and a two-run homer off the bat of Matt Samson.
- The Eagles turned the tide in the next inning, scoring seven times, adding three in the sixth and five in the seventh.
- WU pulled closer with two in the eighth on a Boccio homer and a pair more in the ninth courtesy of an RBI single from Greg Elfreth and a sac fly by McParland.
- Boccio finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBI.
UP NEXT
The two teams play a winner-take-all game on Sunday, May 2 from The Yard in St. Davids, Pa. As the higher seeded team, Widener will play as the home team and bat second. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
