@WidenerBaseball Drops Heartbreaker In Game Three At Eastern

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – The Widener University baseball team battled to the final out with the tying run on second in the bottom of the ninth, but the Pride dropped a heartbreaker in a deciding game three of the MAC Commonwealth quarterfinals, 8-7 to the Eastern Eagles on Sunday afternoon.

GAME THREE NOTES
  • Trailing 7-3 into the bottom of the sixth, the Pride battled back as Matt Samson led off with a double and scored on a Brandon Reis single. Greg Eflreth followed with a single and the runner moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Kyle Brex singled the pair home, making it 7-6.
  • Eastern got an unearned run in the top of the ninth, pushing back to a two-run lead.
  • WU got the tally back immediately in the bottom of the ninth as Bryce Fremgen led off with a homer Two batters later Nick Barenz singled. Aaron Nuble came in to pinch-run and moved to second on a wild pitch, but remained there through the final two batters of the game.
  • Widener got off to a good start as in the bottom of the second inning, Justin Costanzo broke the ice with his fourth homer of the year.
  • Later in the frame, Nick Barenz walked and Brandon Reis was hit by a pitch in front of Greg Elfreth who singled to right, plating Barenz for a 2-0 lead.
  • The Eagles responded, scoring three runs each in the third and fourth to go up 6-2.
  • WU got a run back in the fifth as a Kyle Brex double was followed two batters later on a Bryce Fremgen single, plating the runner, slicing the edge to 6-3.
