CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University baseball team hit seven homeruns in the doubleheader as the Pride swept a Senior Day twinbill against the Hood Blazers, winning game one 13-0 and game two 17-1.
GAME ONE NOTES
- Widener jumped out early with three first inning runs on the strength of just one hit. Kyle Brex reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, and moved to third on an error, before scoring on a wild pitch.
- Later in the inning, Justin Costanzo had an RBI single before the final run came in to score on a throwing error.
- Brex got the offense started in the third with his first career homer. Three batters later, Costanzo singled home Anthony Boccio to make it 5-0.
- The Pride put the game away in the fourth, plating seven runs, the key shot a three-run homer from Boccio.
- WU closed the scoring in the contest when Alex Savkov connected for his first career long ball.
- As good as the hitting was, Dylan Peiffer was outstanding on the mound. The senior tossed his second straight shutout, scattering five hits, walking none, and striking out seven.
GAME TWO NOTES
- The Blue and Gold got the offense started from the word go as Tommy McParland homered to lead off the bottom of the first.
- In the second, Greg Elfreth got in on the act in the second with a two-run double to plate Costanzo and Bryce Fremgen.
- Matt Samson highlighted the five-run third inning with a grand slam for his second homer of the season.
- Eight more runs crossed the plate in the fourth as Widener left the yard twice more with Costanzo and Fremgen going deep.
- The runs were plenty for Joey Zettlemoyer who tossed seven innings allowing eight hits and just one run.
- Elfreth finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBI.
