@WidenerBaseball Battles To Final Inning In Both Ends Of DH Against Eastern

CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University baseball team played a pair of games that came down to the final inning, but the Pride was dealt two setbacks against the Eastern Eagles on Thursday, falling 10-8 and 6-4.

GAME ONE NOTES
  • Things got off to a rough start for the Pride as Eastern scored five in the first and one in the second, building a 6-0 lead.
  • Widener got on the board in the third on a solo homer by Matt Samson and scored twice more in the fourth as Kyle Brex delivered a two-run double that knocked in Nick Barenz and Brandon Reis, who reached on catcher's interference and a single respectively.
  • In the fifth, the Blue and Gold plated two more as a single by Bryce Fremgen and a double by Justin Costanzo put runners on second and third. A single by Barenz scored Fremgen and an RBI groundout from Reis sent Costanzo across the plate, cutting the lead to 6-5.
  • Tommy McParland led off the seventh getting hit by a pitch and moved to second on a groundout. Reis came up and doubled down the rightfield line, bringing home McParland to tie the game.
  • Eastern rallied to score four times in the eighth. Widener battled back again as run scoring hits from McParland and Barenz cut the lead to 10-8, but a sharp comebacker to the mound was fielded cleanly and tossed to first for the final out of the game.
  • A bright spot on the mound was the performance of Sal Velotti. Making his first career appearance, the sophomore tossed four scoreless, hitless innings, striking out three.

GAME TWO NOTES
  • Widener got things started on the right foot, getting a run in the second as Greg Elfreth doubled home McParland, who had singled with two out.
  • In the third, Brex singled and moved to third on a pair of throwing errors on a pickoff play. Anthony Boccio followed with a walk. On an 0-1 count, Boccio went to steal second. The ball got by the catcher, allowing Brex to score and moving Boccio to third. Later in the inning, a balk allowed Boccio to cross the plate.
  • The Eagles offense woke up with two runs in the fourth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh.
  • WU posted a run in the bottom of the inning as Matt Samson reached on a strikeout passed ball and later scored on a Fremgen single.
  • Liam Nihilll recorded career-highs of 6.1 innings pitched and six strikeouts.
