@WidenerBaseball Splits High-Scoring Doubleheader With Albright

CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University baseball team posted 19 runs as the Pride split a doubleheader with the Albright Lions on Sunday, winning game one 8-2 before a 13-11 setback in the second contest.

GAME ONE NOTES
  • Anthony Boccio led the offense with three hits, including a triple, an RBI, and two runs scored.
  • Kyle Brex, Bryce Fremgen, and Alex Savkov each had two hits and all both drove in and scored a run.
  • Alex Zilli picked up the win with four innings of work, not allowing an earned run, striking out four.
  • Trailing 1-0 into the bottom of the third, Widener picked up three runs as with two outs, Boccio and Fremgen singled in front of Brandon Reis who delivered an RBI hit to tie the game. An error on the next play allowed two more runs to cross the plate.
  • The Blue and Gold struck again with two outs in the fourth as Brex singled home Savkov, who had singled and stole second. Two batters later, a Fremgen double plated Brex.
  • Widener closed the scoring with one in the fifth and two in the sixth.

GAME TWO NOTES
  • Widener jumped out early with two in the second on a homer by Justin Costanzo and an RBI triple from Ian Kauffman that scored Greg Elfreth, who singled earlier in the frame.
  • Leading 2-0, defensive miscues opened the door for Albright to score 11 fourth inning runs.
  • Undaunted, the Pride started the comeback trail in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs on an RBI double from Reis and a run scoring groundout by Kauffman.
  • Sac flied off the bats of Matt Samson and Brex brought two more runs across in the sixth, pulling the Pride to 11-6.
  • The Lions scored twice in the seventh to extend the edge, but Widener came right back as walks to Fremgen and Costanzo were sandwiched around a double from Tommy McParland to load the bases. A wild pitch scored one run before a Reis sac fly brought in McParland to make it 13-8. A throwing error later in the inning allowed Costanzo to come home, cutting the lead to four.
  • Another run scored for WU in the eighth on a McParland single. In the ninth, Widener cut the gap to 13-11 on a single by Brex to score Kauffman, who had walked with one out. The Pride had the tying run on and the winning run at the plate before a double play ended the game.
  • Kauffman went 2-for-3 with two RBI, two runs scored, and a walk.
  • Fremgen, McParland, and Greg Elfreth posted two hits apiece.
  • Liam Nihill tossed two scoreless, hitless innings, allowing the Pride to battle back late in the game.
