Sieminski Tosses Shutout As @WidenerSoftball Splits DH With York

CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University softball team split its Saturday afternoon doubleheader with York (Pa.), falling 4-1 in game one and dealing the Spartans their first defeat of the season with a 1-0 victory in game two.

GAME NOTES
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
  • After two scoreless innings, Widener found the board first in the bottom of the third. Lovell got on base after being hit by a pitch and an ensuing Spartans error allowed her to advance to third as McDowell reached first. While McDowell attempted to steal second during the next at-bat, Lovell snuck home to give the Pride an early 1-0 lead.
  • Kait Jaworski held York to just one hit and no runs through six, but the Spartans got the solo home run they needed in the top of the seventh to send the game to extras.
  • Four Widener errors in the eighth allowed the visitors to tack on another three scores and sneak away with the 4-1 win in the opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
  • Game two was a pitcher's duel with each side registering just three hits in the contest. Sieminski went the distance, holding the Spartans scoreless through seven innings pitched and striking out six batters.
  • Calciano provided the only score of the game when she solo homered to center field in the bottom of the fifth. It was all the Pride needed, however, as Sieminski fended off York's offense in the final two frames to grab her second win of the season.
