Game Recap: Baseball |

Peiffer, Fremgen Lead The Way As @WidenerBaseball Sweeps Eastern

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – A superb game one pitching performance and clutch game two hitting led the Widener University baseball team to a sweep of the Eastern Eagles on Saturday. The Pride took the first game 5-0 before a 6-5 win in the second contest.

BY THE NUMBERS
GAME ONE NOTES
  • The opener belonged to Dylan Peiffer who tossed a complete game shutout, striking out seven. He did not allow a hit after the first inning and faced the minimum number of batters through his final six innings of work.
  • Widener got Peiffer all the runs he needed in the top of the first when Savkov singled, moved to second when Elfreth was hit by a pitch, advanced on a fly out, and scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Blue and Gold extended the lead later in the inning on a sac fly by Fremgen, plating Elfreth.
  • A double by Savkov and a single by Elfreth brought home two more runs in the second, the first scoring Andrew Yates who singled to lead off the frame.
  • The final run crossed the plate in the fourth when Aaron Nuble singled with one out and came in two batters later on a double by Savkov.

GAME TWO NOTES
  • The afternoon contest had a decidedly different tone as Eastern jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings.
  • Widener battled back with two in the fourth as with two outs Anthony Boccio walked before Fremgen homered. In the fifth, Stephen Posner singled and Savkov walked before Elfreth doubled, plating Posner, cutting the lead to 5-3.
  • The eighth inning clinched the comeback as singles from Elfreth and Brandon Reis and a walk to Boccio loaded the bases. Fremgen followed with a walk to force home a run. Barenz came up next and cracked a double to right, scoring Reis and Boccio, making it 6-5 Widener.
  • Meanwhile, the bullpen did its job as Andrew Jaffarian did not allow a run in 3.1 innings of work. Toby Hallman came on and got the final out of the seventh to earn the win. Jake Good pitched two scoreless innings, earning his third save in as many chances.
