CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University softball team picked up another win as they split a doubleheader with Stevens on Sunday afternoon. The Pride finishes the weekend 3-1 against the Ducks and advances to 5-5 overall.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Kait Jaworski threw another strong game one, allowing just one earned run in seven innings and striking out six batters.
- In the nightcap, Mikayla Fedele pitched relief in the final two innings, giving up one hit and keeping the Ducks scoreless. She grabbed the win and moves to 3-0 this season.
- Carli Benozich went 3-of-4 at the plate, knocking in two doubles and a single.
- Lindsey Cooper had three hits and drove in one RBI.
- Liv Robinson handled pinch running duties, picking up two stolen bags.
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME ONE
Widener got on the board first in the fourth inning when Robinson came in to pinch run for
Bella Walker at first. After being sacrificed to second and stealing third, she was plated on another sacrifice bunt from
Jess Kaczmarczyk to give the Pride the early advantage.
An error in the fifth allowed two Stevens players to score and retake the lead. Despite Jaworski retiring seven of the next eight batters she faced, the Pride was unable to get its offense going again and the Ducks held on to the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME TWO
Widener got its first run in the opening frame after
Ally McDowell scored on a passed ball, but a flurry of hits by Stevens in the third inning and another score by each side put the Ducks up 6-2 at the top of the fifth.
Kaylin Johnson opened the bottom of the fifth with a double to right field and quickly reached home on a Stevens error on the next at-bat. After a Benozich double, Cooper singled to second base to bring another runner home. The scoring continued when
Kelly Dodgson hit a sacrifice fly to plate Benozich and another Ducks error scored Cooper, completing the comeback and locking the score at six a piece. Robinson again came in to pinch run at first and managed to steal second. The go-ahead run came off a double from
Mikaela Lovell that scored Robinson. A groundout ended the inning on the next at-bat, but the one run lead was enough as Fedele pitched scoreless sixth and seventh innings to hold onto the victory.
