YORK, Pa. – The Widener University baseball team got a fantastic game two pitching performance from
Joey Zettlemoyer and
Jake Good as the Pride forged a split of a doubleheader and handed the York (Pa.) Spartans their first loss of the season with a 5-3 victory. York won the opener 8-1.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Zettlemoyer did not allow an earned run in 5.2 innings of work, scattering seven hits.
- Good came on in relief and locked down the final 3.1 shutout innings, surrendering just two hits, striking out three.
- Offensively, both Anthony Boccio and Aaron Nuble had three hits in the doubleheader. Boccio drove in a pair of runs for the Pride.
GAME ONE NOTES
- Widener got on the board with the opening run of the game in the second when Nuble doubled home Stephen Posner, who hit a two-bagger to start the frame.
- Toby Hallman came in and got the Pride out of a jam in the fifth with two-thirds of an inning, not allowing a run.
GAME TWO NOTES
- The Blue and Gold once again got the first run of the game with a double from Boccio, scoring Greg Elfreth who singled with one out.
- After York took a 3-1 lead, the Pride got a run back in the fifth as Nuble and Alex Savkov singled. Elfreth came up and executed a squeeze bunt to plate Nuble, making it 3-2.
- Widener took the lead for good in the eighth as Elfreth singled, followed by an error and a single by Boccio, scoring Elfreth, knotting the score.
- Keeping the offense going, Austin Oliver singled to load the bases for Andrew Yates who singled through the left side, bringing home Brandon Reis and Boccio for a 5-3 Pride edge.

Widener returns to action on Saturday, March 27 when it travels to Eastern for a doubleheader. First pitch in game one is slated for 12:00 p.m.
