WEEHAWKEN, N.J. – The Widener University softball team picked up two more wins in its doubleheader against Stevens on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Ducks 3-1 in game one and 11-5 in game two.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Carli Benozich and Ally McDowell both drove in three RBI and knocked out three hits in game two. Two of Benozich's hits came as doubles.
- Lindsey Cooper picked up five hits and three RBI through both contests.
- Bella Walker and Cooper each stole two bases a piece throughout the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
Widener got the scoring started in the top of the first inning after McDowell walked and was sacrificed to second. Cooper followed with a single and stole a base to place runners on second and third. On the next at-bat,
Kelly Dodgson reached first on a fielder's choice, plating McDowell for a 1-0 Pride lead. A single by
Hope DiMario drove in a second Widener run and
Becca Tiley capped off the inning with a SAC bunt to bring another one home as the Pride took a 3-0 advantage.
Jaworksi (1-3) threw for six innings, allowing five hits and just one earned run. That sole run came off a homer in the bottom of the sixth, but
Jennifer Sieminski pitched a scoreless final inning to grab the save.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
After Stevens scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first, Widener got its offense started in the top of the second. With two outs,
Bella Walker singled to first. Two more hits by
Kaylin Johnson and McDowell loaded the bases. On the next two at-bats, Benozich and Cooper were walked to plate two runners and give the Pride a 2-1 lead.
Another score by the Blue and Gold and three more by the Ducks put Stevens up 4-3 after four innings. Again Widener found itself with two outs and no runners on base in the top of the fifth, but a Walker single kept the inning alive. Two more hits by Johnson and McDowell followed by back-to-back doubles from Benozich and Cooper made the score 7-4 Widener.
Kelly Dodgson plated one more runner with a single before a groundout ended the inning. The Pride would hold onto that advantage and tack on three more scores to come away with an 11-5 victory
Mikayla Fedele (3-1) picked up the win, allowing one earned run and two hits in three innings pitched.

The Blue and Gold returns home to take on Stevens in another doubleheader on Sunday, March 21. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
