READING, Pa. – Three players scored in double figures including
Kyra Schenk who posted her second consecutive double-double as the Widener University women's basketball team came away with a 78-69 win at Albright on Friday night.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Schenk's double-double came behind 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting, and a season-high 13 rebounds.
- Gianna Samuels continued a hot start to her career, scoring 14, dishing a career-high seven assists.
- Jordan D'Ambrosio netted 14, connecting on 6-of-7 shots from the floor.
- As a team, Widener shot 50 percent (31-of-62) for the game and went 6-of-12 from beyond the arc.
- The Pride outrebounded the Lions 41-28.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A hot shooting first period got the Blue and Gold on top early as WU hit 52.6 percent of its shots in the opening 10 minutes. A layup and free throw by Schenk put the Pride up 13-4 just more than four minutes into the contest and Widener rode the good start to a 21-16 lead heading into the second.
In the next frame, the Blue and Gold turned up the defense as well, holding Albright to just 4-of-20 in the stanza, as Widener took a 43-27 lead at halftime. WU extended the edge to as much as 26 when a three-pointer from
Nicole Barnes made it 62-36 with 2:27 left in the third. Albright battled back in the fourth, but the Pride bench, getting some valuable minutes, was able to hold off the rally.
