CLERMONT, Fla. – The Widener University softball team split its two-game slate on Thursday, defeating Bluffton 3-1 in its first matchup and dropping its second 8-0 to Moravian.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Kait Jaworski allowed zero earned runs through six innings and struck out eight batters against Bluffton.
- Carli Benozich had three hits on the day, including a solo home run.
- Ally McDowell recorded two stolen bases and a triple.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
After two scoreless innings by both teams, Benozich knocked out a solo home run to put the Pride on the board. Bluffton evened things back up off a RBI single in the fifth to lock the score at 1-1.
In the sixth, Benozich opened the scoring up again with a single to left field and was sacrificed on the next two at-bats as she advanced to third. A double by
Becca Tiley plated Benozich and an ensuing triple by McDowell sent Tiley home as Widener took a 3-1 lead after six.
Mikayla Fedele pitched a quick three at-bat inning in the seventh to end the game and pick up the save.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
Moravian jumped up 3-0 in the second. Widener got a runner in scoring position in the next inning off a single by
Mikaela Lovell and two sacrifices, but was not able to find the scoreboard. Another three runs by the Greyhounds in the frame put them up 6-0.
The Pride again got into scoring position in the fourth, but was unable to convert. Moravian tacked on two more runs to end the game after five.

Widener returns home from its Florida trip and is back in action for a double-header at Cabrini beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10.
