SEWANEE, Tenn. – Melanie Bert posted five goals, leading the Widener University women's lacrosse team to a 13-8 victory against the Bridgewater (Va.) Eagles on Tuesday afternoon.
 
BY THE NUMBERS

• Bert more than doubled her season scoring output in the game, netting the quintet of tallies on fnine shots.
• Amber Bretz had a hat trick with three goals. She also helped keep the possession rolling with 11 draw controls.
• Caroline Kelley and Gab Cohen each found the back of the net twice. Meg Steffney scored once.
• Defensively, Kaely Cristello scooped four ground balls.
• In goal, Maddie Medve made 11 saves.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED
After the Eagles scored less than 40 seconds into the game, Widener responded with three in a row, two from Bert to take a 3-1 lead with 19:54 left in the first half. A second Bridgewater goal was met by three more from the Pride, one each from Cohen, Bert, and Bretz as the Blue and God took a 7-3 lead into halftime.
 
In the second half, the teams played evenly for the first 16 minutes before WU scored three times in four minutes to go up 13-6, securing the victory.
