@WidenerWLax Explodes In Second Half To Pull Away For Win

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Widener University women's lacrosse team scored nine unanswered goals in the second half as the Pride pulled away for a 17-8 win against the Sewanee Tigers on Wednesday night.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Melanie Bert led the offense, scoring a career-high eight times in the contest. She also picked up a personal best six ground balls.
  • Gab Cohen had the most prolific offensive night of her career with four goals and an assist.
  • Alexis Colella added two goals and a helper, also winning four draw controls.
  • Caroline Kelley and Amelia Alminde each had a goal and an assist. Maddie Taffler contributed with her first career goal.
  • Emma DiGilio was the main distributor with four assists.
  • Amber Bretz had a solid stat line with three caused turnovers, four ground balls, and five draw controls.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pride lit up the scoreboard first less than two minutes in, but soon found itself down 6-3 after four straight Tigers' goals. Two late scores from Cohen and Alminde slashed Sewanee's advantage to one entering halftime.
 
Widener started the second half hot, retaking the lead after a goal from Bert and one 50 seconds later by Colella. At the 20:21 mark, the Blue and Gold cracked the game wide open, scoring nine unanswered goals, including six more from Bert. Her record setting performance helped the Pride roll to a 17-8 final tally and its third win of the season.
 
UP NEXT
The Pride returns home from its Tennessee trip and is back in action at Dixon Field to battle Cabrini on Thursday, March 12. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
