AUBURNDALE, Fla. –
Dylan Peiffer tossed six strong innings as the Widener University baseball team won the opening game of a doubleheader against the Saint Mary's (Minn.) Cardinals by a 3-1 score. The Pride fell in extra innings in the nightcap 8-7.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Peiffer scattered four hits and allowed just one unearned run, striking out eight.
- Kyle Brex had two hits and two RBI in the opener.
- Tommy McParland posted three hits including a home run in the nightcap. He had four hits overall on the afternoon.
- Brandon Reis, Matt Samson, And Andrew Yates each posted a pair of base knocks in the second game with Reis driving in two and Samson bringing home one.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
Trailing 1-0 due to an unearned run in the first inning, the Pride knotted the score in the third as
Justin Costanzo singled and moved to second on a sacrifice. Two batters later, Brex came through with an RBI hit to tie the game.
Widener took the lead in the fifth as
Greg Elfreth doubled to lead off the inning, A groundout moved him to third where to stood when
Ricky Collings singled him home pushing the Blue and Gold up 2-1. The inning continued as McParland singled followed by a second run scoring hit by Brex on the day, extending the edge to 3-1.
That was enough for Peiffer (1-1) who picked up his first win of the year. After the Cardinals put two runners aboard in the top of the seventh with one out against the bullpen,
Joey Zettlemoyer came on to get the final two batters, securing the victory and his first save of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
WU jumped on the board early as McParland singled, advanced to second on a groundout, and scored on a single by Samson for a 1-0 Pride lead. Adding on in the third, McParland walked. Two batters later Samson doubled, putting runners on second and third. Next up was
Brandon Reis who doubled home both men on base.
Bryce Fremgen followed with a single to score Reis and make it 4-0. Capping the inning, a single from Steven Posner moved Fremgen to third before an RBI groundout from
Andrew Yates scored him, pushing the advantage to 5-0.
The Cardinals chirped back, scoring five times in the bottom of the inning to tie the score. They then pushed across two more runs in the fourth, going up 7-5.
Still trailing into the seventh, the Blue and Gold got a run back on McParland's homer. Not done there, with two outs, Reis reached on an error and stole second. After a walk by Fremgen,
Daren Wood singled home Reis, tying the game at 7-7. Deadlocked into the ninth, the Cardinals pushed across an unearned run for the win.
