AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Widener University baseball team opened its spring trip to Florida with its first victory of the season, downing Purchase College 8-5 on Saturday night.

BY THE NUMBERS
HOW IT HAPPENED
Widener got on the board first in the top of the opening inning without the benefit of a hit. With one out Boccio walked and moved to third on a throwing error before coming in to score on an RBI groundout by Matt Samson.

After Purchase scored twice in the bottom of the first, the Pride came back in the third. With one out, McParland walked and stole second where he stood when Boccio singled, bringing home the runner and knotting the game at 2-2. Opening the fourth, Fremgen walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Elfreth doubled home Fremgen, pushing WU up 3-2. After a wild pitch moved Elfreth to third, a groundout from Kyle Brex brought him home, making it 4-2.

The fifth inning saw another run across for the Blue and Gold as McParland walked to lead off the inning and advanced on a wild pitch before a single from Boccio scored him. More small ball came about in the sixth when Elfreth and Brex singled back-to-back putting runners on the corners. Brex went to steal second. As the throw went through, Elfreth took home, extending the advantage.

Meanwhile, on the mound, Kade Jones (1-1) settled in and allowed just one earned run in his final 4.2 innings of work. Jake Good came in to finish the game off and picked up the save.

Leading 6-4 in the eighth, the Pride added an insurance run on an error and got the homerun from Costanzo in the ninth to cement the final score.
