FREDERICK, Md. – The Widener University women's basketball team capped off one of the finest regular seasons in program history as the Pride downed Hood 78-67 on Saturday afternoon.
The win, combined with an Albright loss against Messiah, means Widener will host Albright in the MAC Commonwealth Championship semifinals on Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m.
HISTORY
- Widener finishes the regular season 21-4, matching the best mark for a regular season in program history.
- Devan Rimmer moved into third place on the program's all-time scoring list
- Wednesday will mark the first time the Blue and Gold hosts a conference tournament game since February 20, 2013.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Rimmer led Widener with 27 points in the contest, going 6-for-9 from beyond the arc. It is the third time this season she had connected on six treys in a contest.
- Madison Ireland had 12 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.
- Kyra Schenk added a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.
- Coming off the bench, Jordan D'Ambrosio scored 12, her fourth straight game in double figures.
- Erin Phelan added 10, making it the first time since January 15, 2018 that Widener had five players score in double figures.
- The Blue and Gold pulled down a season-best 52 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pride raced out to an early lead and was up 16-3 just past the midway point of the first quarter on a layup by Rimmer, on its way to a 22-9 lead following first 10 minutes of play. Hood battled back in the second, outscoring Widener 20-12 in the first seven minutes of the frame. WU went back on top 39-31 on a trey by Rimmer, but the Blazers scored the final eight points of the half, knotting things at 39-39 into intermission.
Into the second half, things remained tight through the midway point before the Pride started to pull away, gong up 57-48 on a three by Rimmer with 3:30 left in the third. Hood had another push in it, scoring the last six points in the period before Widener pulled away in the final frame.
