@WidenerLacrosse Opens Season Strong With Win Over Gwynedd Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Widener University men's lacrosse team defeated the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins by a score of 16-4 in its season opener. Seven different players found the back of the cage for the Pride as it made a strong statement to start its 2020 campaign.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Chad Allison led the Pride in scoring and set a career-high with five goals.
  • Paz Gismondi racked up a team-high six points on three goals and three assists.
  • Returning MAC Commonwealth Rookie of the Year, Connor Heisman, opened his sophomore campaign strong with two goals and three assists.
  • First years Jayce Dyer and Nick DiCicco notched their first career goals for the Blue and Gold.
  • Carter Landry made nine saves in the win.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pride opened with three quick goals from Allison, Gismondi, and Heisman in the first five minutes to take an early 3-0 lead. Six more scores in the second quarter allowed the Blue and Gold to take a commanding 9-3 advantage into halftime.
 
The Blue and Gold held the Griffins scoreless in the third behind three big saves from Landry and tacked on four more goals as everybody began getting involved in the scoring for Widener. The fourth quarter saw three goals in less than two minutes by the Pride as it cemented the final 16-4 tally.
 
UP NEXT
The Pride plays its home opener at Quick Stadium on Saturday as it takes on nearby Swarthmore. Opening face-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
