Powell Tosses Complete Game Shutout to Secure @WidenerSoftball Split with Cedar Crest

CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University played a makeup doubleheader, originally scheduled for March 15, against the Cedar Crest College Falcons on Monday evening. The Pride fell 7-4 in game one, and then Sydney Powell threw a three-hit complete game shutout in game two, leading WU to an 8-0 victory in six innings.

  • Ally McDowell ended the day with three hits, three RBI, and two runs scored.
  • Mikaela Lovell had three hits and scored two runs.
  • Malia Calciano went 2-3 with three RBI in game two.
  • Jamie Gosselin came up with a hit and RBI in both games.
  • Powell's win was her sixth of the year.

How it happened in game one
  • Three Cedar Crest hitters crossed the plate in the top of the first
  • Ariel Silva doubled home Gosselin in the bottom of third, making it a two run ballgame.
  • Kait Jaworski replaced Isabella Kostic in the circle at the start of the fourth inning and held the Falcons scoreless until the sixth.
  • A four-run sixth inning by Cedar Crest made it 7-1.
  • Widener got two back in the sixth and another in the seventh, but could not climb out of the hole, dropping game one 7-4.

How it happened in game two
  • After an uneventful first inning, Widener woke up the bats in the second, tallying three runs.
  • Calciano roped a double off the fence in left-center field, bringing home Marissa Camac and Silva.
  • Calciano scored on a sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of McDowell.
  • McDowell drove in her second run of the day in the fourth with a single to left field. Lindsey Cooper scored.
  • Powell mowed down the Falcon lineup in order through the fourth and fifth inning.
  • A fifth inning RBI single from Calciano made it 5-0 Pride.
  • Widener put up three more in the bottom of the sixth, with the game-ending run scoring on a pinch-hit single from Francesa Saam.

Widener heads to Alvernia on Wednesday, April 10 for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
