READING, Pa. – The Widener University softball team went up against MAC Commonwealth opponent Alvernia in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon, grabbing a 5-3 win in game one, then dropping game two to the Golden Wolves 9-1.

Highlights
  • Kait Jaworski got the nod in game one and earned her conference-leading 11th victory of the year.
  • Jamie Gosselin had three hits, two RBI, and one run.
  • Ariel Silva homered in game two. She sits atop the MAC Commonwealth with six this year.
  • Carli Benozich went 2-4 in game one with a triple and an RBI.

How it happened in game one
  • Pitching and defense ruled the first two innings, forcing scoreless softball until the third.
  • Hope DiMario led off the third with a single. Ally McDowell then reached on an error, putting two runners in scoring position with one out.
  • Jamie Gosselin singled on a bunt then moved to second on a throwing error, scoring both DiMario and McDowell.
  • Next at bat, Benozich tripled, making it 3-0 Pride.
  • Alvernia got one back in the bottom of the third.
  • The Pride held a two-run advantage until the sixth inning. Kelly Dodgson brought Silva home from second base with single.
  • Mikaela Lovell singled to lead off the seventh. She was bunted over to second then scored on a double from Gosselin.
  • The Golden Wolves put two on the board in the last inning, but the Pride held off the comeback attempt.

How it happened in game two
  • Three Alvernia hitters crossed the plate over the first three innings.
  • Silva'a homer in the fourth made it 3-1 in favor of the Golden Wolves.
  • Still just a two-run game entering the bottom of the fifth, Alvernia busted it open with a six-piece, creating an eight-run lead and ending the contest.
