Matt Samson reached base all eight times he came to the plate, but the Widener University baseball team dropped a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader to the Albright Lions on Saturday afternoon, falling 6-3 in the opener and 9-5 in the second contest.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Samson went 6-for-6 in the two games with two doubles, two triples, two RBI, and two walks. He crossed the plate five times and also stole two bases.
- Stephen DeBellis had four hits in the twinbill, including two doubles, driving in four.
- Daren Wood had three hits. Brandon Reis collected two.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
- Widener got the game started well as Samsom walked and stole second opening the top of the first. After he moved to third on a groundout, a single by DeBellis plated him for a 1-0 Pride lead.
- Albright grabbed three runs each in the third and fourth innings, building a 6-1 advantage.
- In the fifth, Samson singled and stole second. A fly out moved him to third where he stood when DeBellis cracked a double down the leftfield line.
- The Blue and Gold capped the scoring in the seventh when Samson and Reis singled before DeBellis knocked Samson in with an RBI single.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
- Once again the game got off to a good start as doubles by Samson and DeBellis posted the first run of the game.
- After Albright scored to knot things in the bottom of the first, the Pride broke the bats out in the second. Tammy Scharnikow and Greg Elfreth singled to open the inning before a sacrifice moved them to second and third. A squeeze bunt by Brennan Taylor plated Scharnikow in front of a Samson triple to score Elfreth. Reis singled though the middle to bring home the final run of the frame and give Widener a 4-1 lead.
- With the game tied 4-4 in the fourth, Widener retook the edge as Elfreth walked opening the inning and scored three batters later on Samson's second three-bagger of the contest.
- The Lions had the final say, scoring twice in the fifth and three times in the sixth to create the final score.
