CHESTER, Pa. – Four players had multi-hit games, but the Widener University baseball team dropped a slugfest 12-7 to the York (Pa.) Spartans in a non-conference game on Wednesday afternoon.
BY THE NUMBERS
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Widener got on the board right out of the gate as Samson delivered his first career homer leading off the bottom of the opening frame.
- After York scored three in the top of the second, the Pride countered in the bottom half. Reis led off with a single and stole second. Two batters later, Ryan Bennett doubled off the leftfield pole, plating Reis to make it 3-2. A groundout moved Bennett to third where he stood when Samson singled, bringing home the runner to tie the game at 3-3. WU took the lead as the next batter, Nathan Valenta, tripled into the right-centerfield gap, bringing Samson around.
- Tied at four heading to the bottom of the third, Widener pushed another run across as Nick D'Alessandro walked and moved to second on a sacrifice before scoring on a single by Reis, putting the Pride up 5-4.
- The Spartans grabbed the lead back with three in the fourth and one in the fifth.
- Widener tallied in the fifth as DeBellis walked and moved to third on a single by McParland before scoring on a groundout.
- York added two each in the eighth and ninth. The Pride scored its last run of the game in the eighth when McParland doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout from pinch-hitter Bryce Fremgen.
