READING, Pa. – The Widener University women's lacrosse team accomplished a feat not seen in tha past 35-year seasons, winning its first ever Middle Atlantic Conference postseason game and just its second playoff win ever with a 14-10 victory against the Albright Lions in the MAC Commonwealth Championship First Round on Monday afternoon.
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
- It was the first appearance in the conference tournament for the Pride since falling to Lebanon Valley on April 30, 2013.
- The last postseason win for Widener was a 10-6 victory against Frostburg State on May 11, 1984 in the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament.
- WU had never previously won a MAC playoff game in five tries.
BY THE NUMBERS
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lynch and Bert opened things for WU, finding the back of the net once each in the opening four minutes,
- The Blue and Gold methodically extended its lead as the first half went on as after trading a pair of goals, tallies by Rohrer, Lynch, and DiGilio extended the lead to 6-2 with 12 minutes remaining in the frame.
- Even play in the final third of the period allowed the Pride to take an 8-4 lead into halftime.
- Opening the second stanza, Widener pushed the advantage, using a 5-2 run to go up 13-6 at the 14:00 mark.
- Albright made its push, scoring four in a row, chopping the edge to 13-10 with 3:44 remaining.
- Rohrer posted the final marker of the game with 2:08 left. The Lions had one last chance, but Medve came up strong again, allowing the Pride to run out the clock for the win.
