Game Recap: Baseball |

Late Heroics Allow @WidenerBaseball to Forge Tie with Gwynedd Mercy

CHESTER, Pa.Ryan Bennett hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Widener University baseball team rallied to forge a 6-6 tie with the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins in a game that was called after eight innings due to darkness.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • The game was the first tie for the Pride since April 13, 2016, an 18-18 deadlock against Eastern.
  • It was the third straight game in which Bennett homered.
  • Stephen DeBellis also had two hits in the game.
  • Tommy McParland reached base three times.
  • A trio of relievers combined to allow just one run in five innings for the Blue and Gold. Joey Norton and Joey Zettlemoyer each tossed two scoreless frames.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trailing 6-3 heading to the bottom of the eighth, McParland walked and Greg Elfreth reached on an infield single. Two batter later, Bennett took a 2-2 pitch over the leftfield wall for his third homer of the year, knotting the contest at 6-6.
  • After the Griffins put up a pair in the top of the first, Widener got a run back in the bottom of the inning as Matt Samson singled and stole second. He moved to third on a groundout and came in to score on a sac fly by Stephen DeBellis.
  • The Blue and Gold jumped on top in the second as Tommy McParland walked and moved to second when Greg Elfreth reached on a fielder's choice. A sacrifice bunt by Tommy Scharnikow advanced the runners before Ryan Bennett knocked both home with a single through the middle.
  • Gwynedd Mercy countered with two in the third and one each in the fourth and sixth to go up 6-3.
