WINCHESTER, Va. – The Widener University women's lacrosse team saw eight different players score, but the Pride fell to the Shenandoah Hornets 18-11 on Wednesday afternoon.
 
BY THE NUMBERS

• Kelly Lynch, Melanie Bert, and Emma DiGilio each netted two goals.
• Caroline Kelley, Amber Bretz. Alexis Colella, Kaylee Horchak, and Meg Steffney found the back of the net once.
• Lynch added two assists. Bert and Kelley had one each.
• Katie Hayes made eight saves, all in the first half.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• After a strong opening two minutes on defense that saw Katie Hayes make a pair of saves, Collela worked a fantastic individual effort, rolling off her defender and finding the back of the net for a 1-0 Pride lead. The Hornets rebounded scoring the next six goals to take a 6-1 lead.
• WU got back on the board with 16 minutes to go in the first half as Bretz picked up a loose ball inside the eight meter and found rope.
• Down 8-2 after two goals from the Hornets, a pair of tallies from Bert cut into the lead. A Shenandoah goal stopped the push momentarily, but Widener went right back on the attack. A free position score from DiGilio and an unassisted tally by Lynch sliced the SU lead to just 9-6 at the half.  
• The momentum carried into the second stanza as DiGilio posted her second of the game off a feed from Lynch, cutting the edge to two.
• Shenandoah pulled back on top 12-7 before back-to-back goals from Horchak and Steffney got the Pride back to 12-9 with just less than 17 minutes remaining. SU countered with two goals of its own before the Blue and Gold got a marker from Lynch to make it 14-10.
• Down the stretch, SU scored four of the final five goals to seal the game.

The Pride heads to the coast where it takes on another ODAC school in Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, March 9. Opening draw from Birdsong Field in Virginia Beach is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
