@WidenerSoftball Splits Opening Series

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Widener University softball team split its season-opening series on Monday afternoon, falling 8-3 to Misericordia in game one and defeating Trine University 7-5 is game two.

Highlights
  • Carli Benozich had five hits on the day. The junior shortstop scored two runs and knocked in one.
  • Ally McDowell had two of the Pride's six hits against Misericordia. She finished the day with four hits and four runs scored.
  • Ariel Silva smacked a three-run double against Trine
  • Jamie Gosselin had a couple of hits, one RBI, and a run
  • Kait Jaworski pitched a complete game against Trine

How it happened vs Misericordia
  • The Cougars opened up a two-run lead in the bottom of the first then added one more in the second.
  • Shannon Gullickson pinch-ran for Malia Calciano who walked to start the fourth for Widener. Gullickson scored on a Cougar error, giving the Pride its first run of the contest.
  • In the same inning, Gosselin was credited an RBI after being walked with the bases loaded, making it 3-2.
  • Five consecutive runs from Misericordia in the last three innings cemented the final score.

How it happened vs Trine
  • Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first, Malia Calciano doubled home Benozich and McDowell to even the score.
  • A Misericordia homer made 3-2 in the top of the second.
  • Solid pitching kept it 3-2 until the fifth when the Cougars piled on two more off a double.
  • Hope DiMario kicked off the bottom of the fifth with a single. Singles from Gosselin and McDowell loaded the bases with no outs for Benozich. Keeping the rally alive, she singled to right field, scoring DiMario and making it 5-3 in favor of the Cougars.
  • With the bases still loaded, Ariel Silva cleared them with a double in the right field gap, giving Widener its first lead of the afternoon.
  • Silva later scored on a single Marissa Camac and that was all the Pride needed.
  • Jaworski finished strong, allowing only two singles in the last two innings and recording the complete game.

Widener plays two again tomorrow. Game one is at 3:45 p.m. against Concordia-Moorhead and game two is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. versus Desales
