@WidenerBaseball Drops Heartbreaker After Massive Comeback

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Widener University baseball team made a remarkable comeback, taking a lead after being down 12 runs before falling in 10 innings 17-16 to the St. John Fisher Cardinals on Monday afternoon.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Daren Wood and Stephen DeBellis led the way for the Pride with three hits each. Wood drove in three runs while DeBellis knocked in one and scored twice.
  • Nick D'Alessandro had two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored.
  • Tommy McParland had a huge game off the bench, driving in three runs, including a two-run blast for his first career homer. He also walked twice.
  • The 16 runs are the most for the Pride since a 17-run outburst in last year's MAC Commonwealth Championship against Alvernia. The nine runs in the sixth inning were the most for Widener since posting a 12-spot in the third on February 26, 2017 against Scranton in a game played at the University of Delaware.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trailing 14-2 heading into the top of the sixth, Widener exploded for nine runs in the frame on the strength of six hits, four walks, and a key error by the Cardinals. Keying the rally was an RBI double from Wood and run scoring hits from Nathan Valenta, Matt Samson, DeBellis, and Dylan Morrissette, as well as a bases loaded walk from McParland.
  • St. John Fisher got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, but the Pride resumed the attack in the seventh. A walk to Samson, a hit batsman to Brandon Reis, and a single by DeBellis loaded the bases for Bryce Fremgen who cracked a two-run double, chopping the edge to 15-13. With runners on second and third, an RBI groundout from Nick D'Alessandro plated DeBellis. After a strikeout, McParland mashed his first career homer over the leftfield wall to give the Blue and Gold its first lead since it was 1-0.
  • The Cardinals threatened in the eighth as two bunt singles and a walk loaded the bases, but Donald Edwards was able to induce an inning-ending double play to get out of the jam.  SJFC later tied the game with a sac fly in the ninth and scored on a double in the 10th to end the contest.
  • Opening the game, Widener went up 1-0 in the top of the first on an RBI single from D'Alessandro. The Cardinals built their lead with three runs in the bottom of the first, five in the third, two in the fourth, and four in the fifth with the Pride only mustering a lone tally in the fourth on a single from Wood, bringing home Fremgen who reached on an error to lead off the inning.
