@WidenerBaseball Gets Strong Pitching Effort Against Haverford

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Three Widener pitchers combined to allow just two runs as the Pride downed Haverford 3-2 in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon

  • BY THE NUMBERS
  • The bottom of the order contributed for the Pride as Dylan Morrissette had three hits and Brennan Taylor posted two.
  • Pitching ruled the day for the Blue and Gold. Andrew Jaffarian picked up his first collegiate win with five innings, allowing five hits and two runs.
  • Kyle Laing tossed three shutout innings in relief.
  • Dylan Peiffer authored the ninth for his first save of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Down 1-0 after an early Haverford run, Widener took the lead for good in the third. With one out, Morrissette and Taylor singled. Matt Samson followed with a hit of his own, plating Morrisette to tie the game. Following a stolen base by Samson and a walk to Greg Elfreth, Stephen DeBellis lifted a sac fly, scoring Taylor for a 2-1 WU lead.
  • The Pride extended the advantage in the fourth as with two outs, Nathan Valenta reached on a strikeout wild pitch. Morrissette singled through the right side, moving Valenta to third. Morrissette broke for second with the next batter at the plate. The throw from the catcher missed its target, allowing Valenta to score from third, pushing the edge to 3-1.
  • Haverford made things interesting with a run in the fifth, but the Widener bullpen shut the door as the Laing and Peiffer closed the game with four scoreless innings.
