ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. –
Kelly Lynch came up one point shy of a school record, recording 12 points as the Widener University women's lacrosse team toppled the Elizabethtown Blue Jays 20-13 in its season opener on Saturday afternoon.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Lynch posted her 12 points on the strength of six goals and six assists. It is the fifth game in her career with 10 or more points.
- Melanie Bert was a big part of the Pride attack, also scoring six goals.
- Caroline Kelley, Emma DiGilio, and Amber Bretz each found the back of the net twice. Bretz added two assists and DiGilio posted one helper.
- Kristi Rohrer had a goal and an assist. Chelsea Forsyth tallied her first career goal.
- Katie Hayes shook off a slow start to make 11 saves in net.
- Widener outshot the Blue Jays 41-29 including 30-24 in attempts on target.
- It is the first win for the Pride against Elizabethtown since 2014 and just the second since 2005.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After allowing the first two goals of the game in the opening three minutes, Widener got on the board as Amber Bretz tallied her first career goal off a feed from Lynch.
- From there, the teams traded scores, putting the Blue Jays up 4-2 with 22:18 left in the opening half.
- The Pride found its form as Forsyth found the back of the net. That marker ignited a four-goal run for the Blue and Gold as scores by Bert and two from Lynch pushed Widener up 6-4.
- Elizabethtown battled back, posting two of the next three tallies, pulling to 7-6 before the Pride netted three of the last four in the frame, heading into halftime with a 10-7 lead.
- Widener maintained the attack coming out of the break, scoring the first the goals of the second stanza in a matter of just 2:11 to go up 13-7.
- The Blue Jays chirped back, ripping three goals in a row to cut the advantage to 13-10. The Blue and Gold had the final say, finding rope four times in the next eight minutes to put the game out of reach.

Widener returns to action on Saturday, March 2 when it hosts Swarthmore for a non-conference game. Opening draw is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
