WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Widener University baseball team opened its season with a trip to our nation's capital to take on Marymount. The Blue and Gold split the twinbill, winning the opener 6-3 before falling 2-1 in the second contest.
BY THE NUMBERS
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE (Widener 6, Marymount 3)
- The Pride broke out the sticks early as Samson started the top of the first with a single in his first career plate appearance followed by a steal. A sacrifice moved him to third before DeBellis was hit by a pitch and stole second. Morrissette stepped in and laced a single to left, scoring both runners, putting the Blue and Gold up 2-0.
- Widener added to the lead in the third as with two out, Brandon Reis reached on an error before a single by DeBellis advanced him to third. From there, the Pride executed a double steal with Reis crossing the plate to make it 3-0.
- Marymount got on the board in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-2, but WU wasted no time in coming back as in the top of the fourth, Nick D'Alessandro reached on an error to open the inning and scored on a double by Greg Elfreth. Two batters later, Fremgen posted his first career hit and RBI, singling home Elfreth for a 5-2 advantage.
- DeBellis padded the lead in the fifth, cracking his first homer of the season, sending it over the wall down the left field line.
- On the mound, Peiffer was solid, allowing three runs, striking out four in five innings of work.
- Good tossed the final two innings for his first career save.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO (Marymount 2, Widener 1)
- The second contest was much more a pitcher's duel as Turner turned in arguably his best career outing allowing one run, not walking a batter, and striking out four in five innings of work.
- He was matched nearly pitch-for-pitch by his opposing number as Ryan Bergenhagen also allowed just one run in his start.
- After the Saints got on the board in the bottom of the third inning, the Pride got its lone run of the game on a solo homer by Morrissette.
- The score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the seventh when Marymount pushed across an unearned run on a throwing error.
